Authors are expected to follow the relevant EQUATOR Network reporting guidelines (e.g. STROBE, CONSORT, PRISMA, CARE, SPIRIT, COREQ). See our Author Guidelines.
Peer Review Process
All research submissions undergo double-anonymised peer review (both author and reviewer identities are concealed), with a minimum of two reviewers per submission. Editorials and Commentaries are handled at the editor's discretion and are not peer-reviewed; this is indicated clearly alongside published items of this type.
Reviewers are selected based on their independence, relevant expertise, and absence of conflict of interest. Authors may suggest potential reviewers at submission, but the final selection remains solely at the editor's discretion.
The Editorial Office aims to communicate an initial editorial decision within 10 days of submission, and a first decision after peer review within 6 to 8 weeks of submission. Speed never takes precedence over quality: every manuscript sent for review is assessed by at least two independent experts and handled by an editor with relevant expertise, to ensure a rigorous and fair evaluation. See our Peer Review Policy.
Open Access and Licensing
There is no submission fee. An Article Processing Charge applies only after acceptance, with automatic tiered reductions and waivers based on the World Bank Group's country income classification of the corresponding author's institution, including a full waiver for low-income countries on the World Bank's List of Fragile and Conflict-affected Situations (FCV). See the Article Processing Charges page for full details.
All articles are published under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0). Authors retain copyright of their work and grant the journal the right of first publication.
Editorial Integrity
Populace is committed to upholding the highest standards of publication ethics, including the prevention of plagiarism, transparent handling of conflicts of interest, and clear procedures for corrections and retractions where necessary. The journal follows the Core Practices of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing (COPE, DOAJ, OASPA, WAME), and the ICMJE Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals. Full details are available on our Publication Ethics page.
Publication Frequency
Populace publishes continuously. Articles are published online as soon as they are accepted and ready for publication, without waiting to be grouped into a scheduled issue. This allows research findings to reach readers, practitioners and policymakers without delay.
Articles are collected in one volume per year, which opens on 1 January and closes on 31 December. Each published article is final and citable from its date of publication, with its own DOI.
Archiving
The journal's content will be preserved through the PKP Preservation Network (PKP PN), ensuring permanent access to all published articles. See our Archiving policy.
